Walker brothers

South Grafton track cyclists

John "Cyclone" WALKER (born 1913) and his young brother Charles WALKER (born 1919) were prominent track cyclists just before World War II. They rode on the dirt ovals at Fisher Park in Grafton and McKittrick Park in South Grafton. In this photo, Johnny (on the left) and Charlie are standing in front of the family house in Waterview, with the Walker automobile (a navy-blue Pontiac) in the background. Towards the end of 1940, Johnny Walker competed in a couple of match races against Lennie Rogers, the champion track cyclist from Sydney. Like Lennie Rogers, Johnny Walker rode a Malvern Star track bike (made in Victoria). Lennie Rogers visited the Walker home at Waterview, where my mother invited him to nurse her baby son William.
